Growing tips Agapanthus do not like waterlogged, heavy soils nor do they like those that tend to drying out during the growing season. Avoid rich soils and over feeding , as they promote floppy and weak growth that is vulnerable to frost-damageand and to much nitrogen will limit the production of blooms. Agapanthus require plenty of water during the growing season to ensure success. Growing Agapanthus Grow tender varieties in pots minimum 5 ltrs in a soil-based compost, made up of two parts by volume John Innes No 2 to one part by volume composted bark chips and a little sharp sand . Overwinter them in a frost-free place indoors, such as a conservatory. Keep the plants on the dry side. until growth starts in spring.
Good companions Agapanthus looks spectacular when grown alongside gingers such as Hedychiums greenei and thrysiform and the black bamboo Phylostachys nigra add a little silver foliage of Santolina chamaecyparissus or the Silvery-blue leaves of Melianthus major. for a truly fantastic display. Pests and diseases Agapanthus don generaly suffer many pests, red spider mite and mealy bug can be a problem when plants are overwintering. So severe infestations should be treated with a proprietry insecticide. |
